task
The new extension required a fully integrated, high-performance roofing and cladding solution designed to meet stringent durability, thermal performance, and access requirements. The envelope had to support the long-term operational needs of a specialist educational facility, while delivering a modern and visually distinct appearance. Central were engaged to deliver the flat roofing system, standing seam roofs to stairwells, and rainscreen cladding across the building envelope.
approach
Delivery was phased and carefully coordinated with the main contractor’s construction schedule to ensure minimal disruption and full site accessibility. The nature of the school required heightened attention to safety and programming, particularly in accommodating sensitive access requirements and ensuring high standards of finish. Every system was installed with consideration for longevity, robustness, and future maintenance. Coordination between trades and systems was critical to achieving airtightness, alignment, and thermal integrity across multiple interfaces.
The resulting building offers a thermally efficient, durable, and modern educational environment. Its envelope now performs to the high standards required for a facility that supports pupils with complex needs, with materials and finishes that complement both function and visual identity.
solution
Central delivered a comprehensive £1.1m package over a 10-month period. The flat roof areas were constructed using IKO Permatec anti-root waterproofing, layered above Permascreed on concrete with IKO Enertherm XPS insulation and a water control membrane. This system was selected for its long-term durability and root-resistant properties, suitable for areas exposed to plant growth.
Standing seam aluminium roofs were installed to stair cores using the Euroclad system, complete with insulation and bespoke aluminium cappings. For the external façades, multi-colour Rockpanel rainscreen cladding in four RAL colours (7016, 3020, 6021, and 1012) was applied, with flashings designed to match window and door closures. The cladding was fixed to support both aesthetics and thermal performance, while maintaining a cohesive finish across the extension.
To ensure system performance, a variety of insulation materials were integrated, including Knauf mineral wool and Earthwool Factoryclad, with a Procheck 500 vapour control layer beneath.
