Swansea.com Stadium

Swansea.com Stadium is home to Swansea City AFC and Ospreys Rugby, welcoming over 21,000 supporters for fixtures and major events throughout the year. As a high-profile venue operating to a demanding events calendar, maintaining the integrity and safety of the stadium envelope is critical.

Central Group were appointed by Swansea City AFC to undertake essential roofing works to the East Stand, addressing storm-related damage and ensuring long-term weather performance without disrupting stadium operations.

01

task

The East Stand roof incorporated 2mm clear polycarbonate sheets to a European Profiles 32/1000 profile, with associated closure flashings and edge trims. Over time, and following periods of severe weather, sections of the polycarbonate had deteriorated and sustained damage, resulting in water ingress and compromised performance.

The works focused on approximately 1,200m² of roofing to the East Stand, where the existing polycarbonate sheets and internal edge trims required removal and replacement. In addition, detailing around structural steel columns required upgrading to ensure full integration with the new roof sheets and to eliminate persistent leakage points.

Given the stadium’s exposed location, the roof is particularly susceptible to high winds and adverse weather, increasing both the urgency of the rooflight replacement and the complexity of delivering them safely.

02

approach

Delivering roofing works at height within a live stadium environment required detailed planning and strict control measures. The construction areas were fully demarcated, with controlled access points and exclusion zones to protect staff, players and the public. All operatives underwent site induction and worked in accordance with project-specific RAMS and permit-to-work systems.

Fire safety, emergency planning and rescue from height procedures were clearly defined, including designated muster points and rehearsed recovery arrangements via the Hakki stair access. Wind speeds were monitored throughout due to the exposed nature of the East Stand, with works paused if conditions exceeded safe limits.

Traffic management and waste handling were tightly controlled, with pre-booked deliveries, defined storage areas and daily waste removal to prevent build-up within work zones. This structured approach ensured the project progressed safely, efficiently and without impact on scheduled fixtures or stadium operations.

03

solution

The project comprised the erection of Hakki stair access, loading bays, edge protection and full demarcation to establish a secure working environment. Safety netting was installed beneath the existing roof covering to provide collective fall protection during the removal and installation phases. Heras fencing was erected at ground level to secure the scaffold base and clearly define the construction compound.

Existing polycarbonate roof sheets were carefully removed and replaced in the East Stand only, along with associated internal edge trims. New polycarbonate sheets were installed in accordance with the existing profile, restoring both weather resistance and visual consistency across the stand.

To address historic leakage around structural penetrations, a new liquid waterproofing system was applied at the interface between the steel columns and the new roof covering. This detail provided a seamless, fully bonded solution to reinforce vulnerable junctions and improve long-term durability.

Works were delivered over a seven-week programme, commencing 21 July 2025 and completing 12 September 2025. Careful planning ensured materials, deliveries and access were coordinated around the stadium’s operational requirements.
