South Meadow Children’s Centre

South Meadow Children Centre in Hereford had been facing issues with its flat roofing system. Over time, sections of the asphalt roof had deteriorated, creating potential risks to waterproofing integrity and safety. With the building in daily use by staff and children, maintaining operational continuity was critical. The client required a solution that extended the roof’s lifespan without causing disruption to the childcare services taking place inside.

All works were undertaken while keeping the childcare centre operational, requiring a well-managed and non-intrusive delivery method. A detailed programme was followed to ensure debris was removed safely, surfaces were properly prepared and dried, and no disruption was caused to daily use of the building. Health and safety procedures, especially regarding hot works, were closely followed to eliminate risk to staff and children. Despite the confined work area and the need for precise, phased delivery, the project was completed to a high standard without incident.

Central Group was appointed to carry out isolated flat roofing repairs, including cutting out the damaged asphalt and applying a new overlay. The chosen system was a high-performance, torch-on felt solution comprising the Euroroof Mastergold Capsheet, applied over an Alumasc Bitumen Primer. Work was carried out using Alumasc-approved installation methods. A key part of the solution included applying a safe, fire-regulated process due to the use of hot works. To further enhance safety, appropriate fall protection measures were installed throughout the works.

The result is a durable, fully waterproofed roofing system that not only meets performance and safety expectations but also supports the longevity of the building’s function as a safe, child-focused facility.
