Quarrydale Academy
Quarrydale Academy is a secondary school with academy status located in the community of Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. We refurbished a 2,120m² roof following core samples and worked with flat roofing suppliers, Hera Waterproofing. Another great education project.

task
The roof was at the end of its serviceable life. The original system had started to fail and many areas were marked as fragile due to water damage. Specialist asbestos removal took place and all H&S arrangements for work at a live school environment were planned. We also scheduled our work patterns for the strip and installation of a new deck to minimise disruption.
approach
To manage the work safely, we worked collaboratively with the school, re-directing how students entered certain buildings, to accommodate our construction and ensure student safety and ensure the students could continue their education. A fall protection system was used to install the new metal deck, as a crash deck could not be installed due to a weak floor below. Ceilings also had to be taken down, as they were fixed to the frame of the wood wool slab.
solution
The existing roof surface was cleaned and dried, preparing it for a new waterproofing system. Outlets and apertures were protected to prevent blockages, and existing waterproofing on details like upstands and gutters were stripped back to the structure. Rotten stairs, perimeter uPVC gutters, downpipes, and fascia details were removed. Substrate imperfections were repaired, and chases were cut for new flashings. Asbestos-containing soffits were removed and disposed of by a specialist contractor.
At Roof A, the old single ply waterproofing, insulation, flashings, and details were removed, safely disposing of debris. On Roof B, solar PV panels were removed for reinstallation post-works. Windows and upstand heights were adjusted to be 150mm above the new roof level. Cables, plant, and cable trays were temporarily moved or raised. On Roof C, timber doors and thresholds were removed. Roof area D was redecked with a new metal sheet after stripping the existing covering.
