New Oscott Primary School
New Oscott Primary School in Birmingham, a thriving educational institution, required a comprehensive roof refurbishment to address long-standing issues. Thanks to Central, the school now benefits from a robust, watertight roofing system, improving thermal performance and ensuring the safety and comfort of staff and students for the next 20 years.

task
The roof at New Oscott Primary School was in poor condition and water was leaking into the interior below. The 2,400m² site was made up of eight different roof areas. In total six roofs had two layers of felt membrane waterproofing, and two roofs had an existing single-ply membrane waterproofing.
approach
Working within a live school environment required careful planning to ensure the safety of students. We implemented a robust health & safety plan, scheduling rooflight replacements outside of school hours. Secure fencing and safety signage prevented unauthorised entry into the site area. The continuity of pupil education was maintained, we liaised with teachers and all building users were clear on expectations.
Adapting to the unexpected, we adjusted our tapered insulation scheme to accommodate the varying deck levels encountered during the project.
Unpredictable poor weather conditions threatened to disrupt our programme. However, to make up for the loss of time, dedicated operatives carried out extra work at weekends, to stay on track. This meant we could hand over the finished project on time.
solution
The Central team carefully stripped the existing waterproofing membrane down to the original structural deck. For roofs with a single-ply membrane, we also removed the existing roof deck. Our process involved applying IKO Sprayfast MPP Primer, followed by installing a Systems SA Vapour Control Layer. To ensure a secure solution, we used IKO Sprayfast IBA Insulation Adhesive. Finally, we applied the IKO Goldseal Mineral Capping Sheet, providing a durable and reliable waterproofing finish. As part of the project, we also replaced rooflights and downpipes to ensure the long-term integrity of the roofing system.
