task
The existing roofs consisted of two distinct structures. One area featured Stramit Board, a fragile decking material requiring careful removal, while another was constructed with Woodwool Slab. Both had reached the end of their serviceable life and were no longer fit for purpose. In addition, asbestos was present in the original fascias and soffits, creating further safety and compliance challenges.
approach
One of the primary challenges was the fragile nature of the existing decking, which posed a significant safety risk. Strict access controls and handling protocols were implemented to ensure safe removal without impacting the surrounding structure. Coordinating the new window installations with the insulation upgrades was also critical to maintaining upstand height compliance. Asbestos removal required meticulous planning and execution by licensed professionals, ensuring zero disruption to building occupants and total safety for all site workers.
solution
Central was appointed to deliver a comprehensive roofing refurbishment using the Alumasc Derbigum System, a high-performance waterproofing solution with a 35-year life expectancy at a flat roofing Hereford site. The project included the complete strip-out of the fragile Stramit Board and Woodwool Slab decks, replacement with new structural systems, and installation of a tapered insulation scheme to improve drainage and thermal efficiency. New windows were integrated into the system to achieve compliant upstand heights. The team also carried out safe removal of asbestos-containing fascias and soffits, replacing them with modern, fire-resistant Rockpanel systems that enhanced the building’s appearance and safety.
